The Health Care Quandary
A client recently sent me a link to Dr. Joseph Mercola's online newsletter. Dr. Mercola is an osteopathic physician . He raises some valid points about the state of health care in the US. It is encouraging to hear the advocation of alternative medicine of which I include exercise physiology. It costs the average American in his or her 50's about 12k a year in out of pocket medical expenses (above and beyond what they pay for health "insurance"). Committing to supervised exercise costs about 7k per year and studies show consistently how exercise manages numerous health conditions associated with the out-of-pocket costs. The side effects of exercise are far superior too! Prevention over intervention should reign!

Great segment Diane. I also agree that it's a wonderful thing to have Physicians advocate for alternative/complementary measures. The benefit of maintaining and incorporating not only exercise, but massage as well, far out weigh the alternative - both from overall well being and monetary expenditure.

One out of every six dollars spent in the US economy is for health care. The average for all other major countries is one out of eleven. We spend almost double the amount of money per person on health care as other countries. Over 30 percent of Americans are obese. The average for all other major countries is 14 percent. Double the amount spent on healthcare; double the obesity. Perhaps not THE contributing factor, but certainly a major one.
